knock down returnable crates

Hi,
Need some help! have quote request for a large amount of crates that need to be knock down returnable crates and only the lid can be detached when knocked down. What kind of fasteners are available for this? The crates are not real big, but hold 400# each.

Take a look at the Hardy fasteners at www.hardy-builtfastener.com. they are used a lot on government boxes.

Also Nefab makes a simple 'prefab' kind of box too.

As luck would have it, it looks like both of these companies have people who are moderators here in the forums here. Carey Smith is the guy at Nefab.

I know Nefab is a big international company and Hardy has been around forever.

How big do the boxes need to be? You can also try butterfly latches and piano hinges. The only problem that I've found with them is that the boxes still seem to be able to twist some and that can allow the nailed edges to loosen.

I know the HSB fasteners (hardy) are seriously heavy duty. They're thick steel and pop off with a screw driver.

I haven't seen the Nefeb boxes but I think they're the type that have steel edges pressed into plywood. Maybe you can get them at a wholesale price?

As long as it looks like wood, smells like wood and can pick your teeth like wood, it must be good!
