    Package ISPM 15 Compliance Options

    Hi, everyone!

By now, many of you have already decided how your are going to comply with ISPM-15, "Guidelines for Regulating Wood Packaging Material in International Trade", since it's very likely your shipments will be delayed or sent back if you haven't.
We would like to hear from you. What treatment works best for your business, heat treatment or Methyl Bromide fumigation, and why? Are you buying material that's already treated or doing the treatments at your facility?
Are you applying the IPPC Mark, or does it work better for you to have a wood packaging maker do it for you?
Let's find out what works..and what doesn't. How have you managed the costs of ISPM-15 Compliance? What methods or optiions have you found to be most cost effective?
    Thanks for your input!

    Default ISPM 15 Compliance Options

IBM prefers the HT treatment method. MB is an accepted treatment method but it is an ozone depeleting substance. We purchase all HT treated/marked wood pallets since our shipments are global and often the pallet (and/or pallet load) is reused / reshiped to many countries as moves along our supply chain. This avoids the need to repalletize and avoids accidental shipments on non-compliant pallets.

Hi Michael and welcome to the forums.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by a sample application? By that do you mean a software application or in what situation(s) it's best?

    Michael,

As Jeff already mentioned, we aren't sure what you mean when you ask for a sample application. However, if you are just asking how the IPPC Mark is used and to what material it is applied, I will be happy to address your inquiry.
The IPPC Mark is used on ASSEMBLED wood packaging such as pallets, crates, boxes , skids, etc. or DUNNAGE only. Dunnage is loose pieces of wood blocking or bracing that don't remain asssociated with the commodity being shipped. The mark is applied ONLY to wood packaging or dunnage that has been treated in one of the two approved methods for pest eradication under ISPM-15. These two methods are heat treating to a wood core temperature of 133 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 30 minutes OR fumigation with prescribed dosage of Methyl Bromide gas, for at leat 24 hours.
The IPPC Mark may be applied by:
    The WPM Manufacturer,
    The WPM Treater, or
    An Accredited Inspection Agency.
Please note that any manufacturer or treater of WPM must have a stamp issued to them by an accredited inspection agency and they are required to have monthly inspections in order to continue the use of their stamp. The treated WPM produced can be either constructed with wood that is already Heat Treated or MB Fumigated and stamped accordingly at the mill OR can be produced by treating AFTER it already constructed.
Please note that it is a violation of both Federal and International Law for a WPM Producer to create their own IPPC Mark or to make a counterfeit copy of someone else's. Entities who do this are subject to severe penalties and fines, seizure of their property by the Federal Governement and even arrest.
That's a basic overview of the IPPC mark and how it is used. We welcome additional questions to help you better understand this program.

Worth mentioning, for those companies shipping to Australia, their ISPM 15 rules have changed quite recently.
