Default ISPM 15 services or equipment in Ohio?

For the past year we have been transporting crates that are designed for 25,000lbs machines over 36 miles for a 2 day turn around from Akron, Ohio for heat treating. Does any one know of any erradication services in or near Akron, Ohio? Or any where Purchase a cheap system or a used system?

    Thank you Matthew

    Matthew,

I have several different comments and suggestions for you:
First of all, if you MUST have the items heat treated by someone else, rather than construct them and IPPC mark them yourself, then I would suggest visiting the American Lumber Standard Commitee website at www.alsc.org and clicking on the Wood Packaging area of the site. Here you will find an available list of agencies who issue IPPC marks and their contact information. You will need to check with each agency to see if they have heat treating facilities near you, as there is no national list to which we can refer. You could just send one e-mail to all of them at once and be done in a few minutes. At this time my agency has no facilities that heat treat near you, but perhaps some of the others do.
If you're interested in purchasing heat treating equipment of your own, there is a FREE magazine you can subscribe to called Pallet Enterprise. The magazine is available in print and online, and contains advertising for new HT chambers, as well as, classifed ads that often contain used equipment. I don't know their web address, but if you google the magazine name, I'm sure it will come up. If you decide to install your own heat treating chamber, my agency can perform the required initial chamber verification and the monthly inspections required for you to have your own IPPC stamp.
You also have other options, such as purchasing HT lumber and building your crates from it, enabling you to apply the IPPC mark yourself, if you are signed up woth an inspection agency that issues stamps, such as ours. Methyl Bromide fumigation is also an approved ISPM 15 treatment and is often used for wood packing articles already loaded with heavy machinery, since HTwood is not required and these skids, pallets or crates are often constructed using non-HT hardwoods. Since MB fumigation can be performed after cargo is already loaded in or on the wood packaging, this can be done at ports and shipping hubs, as part of the normal logistics.
I hope this information has been helpful and gives you some direction. If you would like to discuss any of these in more detail, feel free to contact me separately from the forum by calling (407) 380-7914 or e-mailing me: tstafford@staffordinspection.com

    Good Luck!
