Default Looking For More Business in Ohio

My name is Matthew, after years of producing crates for one company we began to branch out about 5 months ago, as the owner with a graphic design/tech. illustration degree I took it upon myself to make some brochures, mailers, and a website( akroncrateandpallet.com ) and distributed them to 30 -40 or companies ranging from machine shops, engine builders, and mold making companies ( as Akron Ohio is a hot bed for the mold industry and plastics) we have recieved a few jobs involving shipping large molds ranging from 5000- 40,0000lbs, but have had trouble finding any other customers. There are no other crate companies with in 25 miles. Are there any specific types of companies I should be targeting, are there any other good ways to generate business?

Default Sell crating through standard business practices

    Hi Matthew,

It sounds like you've gotten off to a good start. I've found that some people look too closely at crating itself when trying to drum up sales and forget about the basics. One option that come to mind is asking current customers who their competitors are and go after them. Another is purchasing lists through someone like Info USA. You can narrow the list to NAICS codes, business size, etc. Also, consider subcontracting on government jobs. You can get more info on Business.gov, FBO.gov and the GSA website just to name a few.

Marketing will only get you so far in this business. I could go all day into detail on sales hits but I cant give all my secrets away, since your in my area. Try visiting your local manufacturing areas to see what kind of packaging they have outside. Old busted up pallets and crates outside in the yard are a good indication that there is some brand new ones on the inside. Try some of your local small export shipping companies.

    Eric of Custom Built Crates,
I took a look at your Facebook Page I would not worry about us we do not handle crates as large your company. I do have to ask do you find any advantages from being on Facebook? It also looks like you have some sort of in house crane, would you think thats more advantageous then a heavy duty forklift?

    Thank you,

    Matt,

We have two bridge cranes a 30 ton and a 20 ton. They work great for what we use them for. Cranes are not for everyone. Theres allot of responsibility and regulations required by OSHA to maintain. A standard forklift would be the most cost effective option for a smaller company.

In regards to Facebook, I see it as free marketing so why not. Mine is set up more for networking with our employees and their families..

    Best regards,
    Eric
