Thread: Crate Ventilation

  1. #1

    Default Crate Ventilation

I am currently reviewing a Packaging Requirement document from my customer's CUSTOMER. They want the crates ventilated for humidity and moisture control for storage during long periods. I have vented large crates before, but they also want these crates to "safeguard" from Sand and Dust. Bascially I understand they crates may sit in the desert for several months prior to being moved into a facility.

Does anyone have any suggestions on materials or methods of how I can vent my crates while keeping dust and sand out?

Using the proper amount of desiccant with a good vapor barrier will be much better than simple ventilation for moisture control. To answer your question, I would try using standard ventilation caps with a simple furnace filter to cover the hole from the inside. Just a thought

Hey thanks for the quick response and the suggestion for "filtering" out the sand and dust. Have you used this before or what this just a thought?

I've never had this type of request for ventilation. Though I would think any type car filter or standard home filter would be suitable for this application.

I was just curious. I am sure someone has had to ventilate and protect from dust some of the military crates going to Iraq over the years. Thanks for your help

I have found that most Mil-Specs given by 3rd party customer's are usually outdated. Most of the specs do not consider the latest packaging technology and export standards. My company has fulfilled 60+ Mill Spec jobs in the last year and approx. 30% were revised with updated information before product release.

The latest job was revised 3 times with different wood treatment options. Finally ending with your standard ISPM 15 Cert. All took place midstream of product fabrication.
