Default Needing to build large crates for copper gutters

    Hello,
I am needing to build some very long crates, 19ft and 11ft, for copper gutters. Can somebody help me with a design. I have never built crates before but I am accustomed to building things. I ran into a problem where a crate purchased from a crate builder broke ruining $17,000 worth of copper gutters...so I have decided to build crates in house. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Hello Pearson and welcome to the forums,

You may want to post more information such as specific dimensions, weight, surface protection requirements, etc. It's also important to know where the product is shipping from and to as well as how it will get there.

You may also consider looking at the standards page here on the WCO website and/or looking into Crate Pro although I don't think it's your best option.

You may also want to consider looking into other crate manufacturers. Personally, I think you may run a higher risk in doing your own crating than if you were to find a new, experienced crate maker. If you post your company contact information here you'll likely be contacted by enough people that you can learn more and make an educated decision as to who to use.

    Mr. Pearson,

With over 30 years of crating experience, I would suggest using what we call a "Continued Run" style. I have made crates in lengths of 80+ feet long using this style via standard materials. Please see the attached photo

This crate is 18ft long x 24x20 and has a zero flex design with a capacity of 5,000 lbs. The walls are are framed with spliced 1x4x16's and the the skin is standard 7/16. The floor of the crate is constructed of 3/4 TG OSB. Runners are standard 4x4's with 2x4's on the bottom for skids.
