When quoting, one thing everyone should consider is... and I forget the author of this quotation...

"Price is what you pay, value is what you get."

So when you're determining what you should charge the customer, you have to look into what is involved in that price. Are you selling only a wooden crate, plain and simple? Or are there services or consulting which has (or has yet) to be done.

So it's hard to say what price you should charge.

If you're quoting a job just for a wooden crate, then you should definitely be lower in price than an alternative company offering services or packaging design, etc...

Hopefully this helps, but your direct question has soo many under lying questions that need to be uncovered first.

So in order to create a win/win you need to really understand what the customer really wants from your company. This way you know if they're looking for a straight price comparison or services included. Then you can (through open discussion with the customer) come up with a creative win/win scenerio.

    Best of luck

J.C. - Where you are located (I'm not going to say since you didn't make it public) there are many pricing concepts. I've lived there. Many of your customers may perceive the value of your containers based on their native country and you may want to offer a broad range of prices. Most of your business would likely be export from small businesses and probably not many large production runs.

Consider the content first. Is it high-tech or highly durable. I would then consider the customer AND the content together. If it's a low-tech company, and you're crating a high-tech item, you may be able to charge more. If it's a low-tech item with a low-tech company, you will definitely need to be competitive in pricing.

The most important thing may be to simply speak with the customers and educate them. Tell them that custom crating encompasses everything from steel blocks to lenses for satellites. I would tell them that I want their business and want to be sure I get it so "Tell me what you want". Watch out for someone who just throws out a low price to you and says you have to beat it. Be sure that the price you come up with justifies the time you need to spend with the client.

Good luck. Frankly, just by asking your question here is a good start. Communication is the key to business.
