How often should I be looking for new and/or cheaper wood products to help me with my bottom line? Do new products or materials come out often?

Although new lumber species and grades are a rarity, it pays to ask "what else is available?" when on the phone with your lumber supplier. In the area that I supply, Southern Yellow Pine lumber and plywood are king... OSB (oriented strand board) is much less expensive than plywood, yet OSB exhibits the same or better characteristics than CDX plywood. Most of my crating customers started out using CDX Plywood, but switched to different grades of plywood (mill cert, shop, reject, etc.) and OSB to reduce crating costs with no loss of protection.
