Rail cars are designed with short draft and long draft gear, which refers to the coupling type. The draft gear is supposed to cushion the impact when rail cars are coupled. Testing of crates and IBC’s (Intermediate Bulk Containers) for this type of environment has been accomplished mostly by trial and error. With the unique capability of the Horizontal Impact Test System (HITS), the system can reproduce impacts for both short and long draft rail coupling in the range of 30-180msec using a trapezoidal shock pulse with impact velocities of up to 12 mph.
Similarly, the forklift truck environment also exposes crated products to horizontal impacts. These impacts are half-sine in nature and have a much shorter duration ranging from 2.5 to 12msec also with impact velocities up to 12 mph. The HITS can be programmed to meet these requirements.
Following the guidelines in outlined in the ASTM D4003 specification, the HITS provides a consistent and repeatable way of reproducing forklift or rail impacts that occur during the handling of palletized or unitized loads.
